Kitchen Countertop Care

Feb 13, 2014

One important but often overlooked aspect of home maintenance is proper kitchen countertop care. If your countertops are made out of marble or another delicate material, cleaning and maintaining them the right way is essential to ensuring that they look beautiful and new for a long time to come. Fortunately, caring for your kitchen countertops is easy if you follow these simple steps.

Clean Countertops Daily

Kitchen countertop care begins with daily cleanings. Many foods and beverages that may end up spilled on your counters have acids or other ingredients that can permanently damage the countertops. That is why it is important not to neglect spills and stains on your counters. Wipe down your countertops with warm water, dish soap, and a soft cloth once a day.

Remove Stains

Despite your best efforts at kitchen care, your countertops may end up with permanent stains on them. Most can be removed with a heavy-duty cleaner, but always make sure that the cleaner you choose is safe for use on marble, granite, or whatever material your countertops may be made of. If stains persist even after a good scrubbing, put a few drops of cleaner on a damp rag and lay the rag over the stain to soak for about 30 minutes. This should loosen the stain enough to remove it.

Avoid Scratching Countertops

Few materials are more likely to leave scratches on your countertops than ceramic. If you use ceramic cookware, be sure to set down a towel, potholder, or other covering before you place the ceramic on the counter. Avoid standing on your countertops, whether to screw in a light bulb or to reach a high shelf.

Use a Sealer on Older Countertops

Most countertops come from the manufacturer already coated in a resin sealer to prevent stains and other damage. However, this sealer only lasts about 10 years. If your counters are older than that, consider getting them resealed to prolong their life and beauty. Call (480) 991-1993 today to learn more about kitchen countertop care or to find out about the range of countertop options available when you remodel with Legacy Design Build Remodeling.
