Universal Design in the Bathroom & Barrier Free Showers

Apr 21, 2011

More and more people are concerned about having to leave their current homes as their health needs change. Although the principles of Universal Design can be applied to the entire home, the most popular area of concern is the bathroom. When you or a loved one is faced with a physical challenge, a simple task like taking a shower can introduce new challenges you have yet to consider.

Most showers have a minimum 4″ x 4″ threshold at the entry to serve as a barrier and keep the water inside where it belongs. You may have never noticed these curbs before, but they can make it impossible to enter and exit the shower by yourself when you rely on a wheelchair or walker to move around the house.

Barrier-free showers (sometimes called “roll-in showers”) remove that curb and let you walk or roll directly into the shower, giving you the safety and independence to bathe unassisted. The shower walls and floor are engineered to quickly drain the water, eliminating the need for a tall threshold. On some models, a short and flexible water dam is used to help keep water inside. The water dam easily gives way as you roll over it, and then returns to its natural shape.

Inside the shower, grab bars can be installed to enhance safety and provide piece of mind. Shower seats come in a variety of styles and materials, and some models can be folded up out of the way when not in use. Water handles and recessed soap/shampoo niches should be located for easy access from a seated position. Hand held shower wands can be as luxurious as they are practical, with most models offering an array of massage selections.

There are numerous design and product options to consider when planning your “Aging in Place” or ADA-compliant bathroom remodel. For an end result that’s both functional and beautiful, seek the advice of an experienced and professional remodeler.
